For nearly four months, Feathers of Hope has been advocating for the formation of a (temporary) cross-party coalition of moderate Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives for the purpose of removing and replacing Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The point is to disempower the radical MAGA minority to whom Speaker McCarthy has traded his authority in exchange for their support.
For those new to our network, here are links to a few recent posts that will bring you up to date on exactly what we are doing and why:
Here’s one link: Wait, Exactly How Will We Do This? (January 28)
Here’s another: Replacing McCarthy - A Progress Report (February 16)
Here’s a third: Moderate Republicans? Really? (March 2)
For many progressive Democrats, the idea of a coalition with moderate Republicans seems unrealisitic. Again and again we’ve heard that there are no moderate Republicans, that they’re all the same. But we here at Feathers of Hope are in the process of demonstrating that this is not true. It’s not true in the Congress (see Moderate Republicans Found! ) And it’s not true in the country at large. There are many Republicans who disagree with us on most substantive issues, but who strongly support the basics of our democracy and the integrity of our governing institutions.
The conversation Tuesday evening (7;30 EDT, 4:30 PDT) between Bill Kristol and Simon Rosenberg is unlikely to broach our proposal to replace McCarthy. But it should dispel the idea that Democrats are alone in the struggle against Christian Nationalism and white supremacy being promoted by MAGA radicals.
So if you have an hour or so tomorrow evening (Tuesday, March 14), and would like some encouragement that all is not lost, click on this RSVP link to get the code and tune in.
