McCarthy is Desparate
Great news! Robert Reich has embraced the idea that Democrats provide the winning margin of votes for a Republican Speaker of the House, thereby marginalizing the MAGA faction.
On his Saturday substack broadcast “Coffee Klatch”, Mr. Reich said this:
“I think the Democrats ought to strike a deal and say … we will give you votes, in return for which we don’t want you to kowtow to the Freedom Caucus … “
He later adds, “I think it could happen.”
So far as I know, this is the first time a bona fide political celebrity has embraced the idea. (Robert Reich was Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration, and is a frequent guest on MSNBC.) And it’s a rare opportunity to express our support for it to someone who agrees and is truly influential.
As I’ve said before, the important thing is to get people talking about this, to get it into the national media narrative. So please take a moment right now to contact Mr. Reich and urge him to promote the proposal on TV. And please ask your contacts to do so as well. You can use your own words, or copy mine below.

There’s only a few days left before the Christmas holiday, and the vote for Speaker is January 3. No time to waste.
Let’s do it now !

Your proposal on Saturday’s “Coffee Klatch” -- that Democrats make a deal to provide the winning margin of votes for a Republican Speaker of the House in exchange for isolating the MAGA group -- is a great idea. I’m sure many people would support it if they knew the details as you presented them.
I agree with you that this could really happen, and urge you to go on TV to talk about it. The more public support there is, the more likely both Democrats and moderate Republicans would endorse it.
Perhaps one of the hosts on MSNBC where you appear could have a panel discussion about how your proposal can work (rather than about why it won’t). That would go a long way toward building momentum for the idea.
You can be instrumental in selecting the next Speaker of the House. There’s only a few days left, and this is so important.
Please help make it happen.
