I completely understand your fear, Ian. But I can assure you MTG would not get the votes of any of the four I profiled in this post. And I could name at least a half-dozen or more who'd vote for almost anyone else.
The real threat on the right who might be able to succeed Speaker McCarthy is Steve Scalise (R-LA). He's much stronger than McCarthy and wouldn't let MAGA push him around so much. But he doesn't really disagree with them, so it'd be almost as bad.
That's why we have to keep advocating for a moderate replacement like Bacon or Fitzpatrick.
Thanks for the info on these Republicans. I am passing your report along to my email group, which contains a number of working press, my former colleagues. It is heartening to know that there are educated and competent people in our Congress who could serve, but why should the Republican Party choose a mental deficient with a questionable background like Donald Trump as its PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE? Some of the people you point out should be far more qualified to be the party's standard bearer.
Thank you so much, Jay. I know you've been a very hard sell on this project. So I especially appreciate you sharing with your group.
I could fill pages with answers to your question about why Republicans choose Trump. In fact, whole books have been written on the subject. I think it's mostly about a celebrity doing his stand-up bit, and the bit confirming his audience's prejudices while exploiting their fears and resentments. Then there's the media -- always mezmerized by celebrity, and always ready to provide a well-lit stage.
Spot on Jerry, although I wonder if there are enough Democrats with the courage to make the necessary moves. Perhaps if Hakeem Jeffries led the way, there should be at least 317 from the two parties willing to follow.
You're absolutely right, Dave. Support from Democratic leadership is essential. That's why I included contact info for both the past and current members of Dem leadership team on our Updated Contact List here:
David Joyce is listed as Dave Joyce on the Common Ground scorecard with a score of 48.
Mike Gallagher scores 68.
Brian Fitzpatrick scores 100, and is co chair of The Problem Solvers Caucus.
Don Bacon scores 104.
Professor Reich must know something about David Joyce that is not in these scores. I hope there are enough Republicans that will work bipartisan to break the Freedom Caucus stranglehold.
Well said, but I fear that the next Speaker is likely to be MTG.
